About Iran
|
As large as 1,640,195 square kilometers, Iran is located at the semi-southern northern moderate region between 25 degree, 03 minutes, and 47 minute, 39 degrees of northern width from equator and 14 minutes, 44 degrees and 20 minutes and 63 degrees eastern longitude of Greenwich Meridian. Approx. 90 percent of country's total soil is situated at the environs of Iranian plateau.
Generally, Iran land and territory is mountainous and semi-dry region.
Its average height from seal level is more than 1,200 meters at large. Mountains, heights constitute more than half of total land area of the country. In the same direction, plains constitutes one fourth of total land area of the country while under- cultivation land accounts for less than one fourth of total land area of the country.
The lowest part of the country is as high as 56 meters in Loute Pit while its highest point is Demavand Peak as high as 5,628 meters at large, located at Alborz Mountain Range.
At the southern outskirt of the Caspian Sea, height of land is 28 meters lower than free sea level.

- Ashuradeh islands and three islets at the costal area of the Caspian Sea,
- Miyankaleh peninsula or Miyanqaleh in the vicinity of Ashuradeh islands,
- Hosseinqoli Gulf or Ghazanqoli Gulf, mouth of Atrak River at the Caspian Sea coast,
- Anzali Marsh (lagoon),
- Khark Islands of coral reefs,
- Do-Khaharan Lake, north of Laar Plain,
- Taar and Hovayr Lake, west part of Firouzkouh and each Demavand,
- Sama (Velasht) Lake at the northern area of Marzanabad and Kalardasht district,
- Khalno Lake, located at border of Tehran and Mazandaran provinces and end of large gorge (valley) of Varangroud,
- Gohar Lake at the west angle of Oshtorankouh and south part of Tapaleh Strait,
- Avan Lake, in Qazvin Province and northern part of Alamout Valley,
- Neor Lake, in border of provinces of Ardebil and Gilan at the foothill of Boghrodagh Castle,
- Fasli Gol Lake, in souithern Boldaji, Sistan-Baluchestan Province
